Shannon Nelson 9fee9db5fb i40e/i40evf: find partition_id in npar mode
When in NPAR mode the driver instance might be controlling the base
partition or one of the other "fake" PFs. There are some things that
can only be done by the base partition, aka partition_id 1. This code
does a bit of work to find how many partitions are there per port and
what is the current partition_id.

Mitch A Williams 0758e7cb5f i40evf: kick a stalled admin queue
On some versions of the firmware, the VF admin send queue may become
stalled. In this case, the easiest solution is to just place another
descriptor on the queue; the firmware will then process both requests.

The early init code already accounts for this, but the runtime code does
not. In the watchdog task, check for the stall condition, and if it's
found, send our API version to the PF. When the PF replies, just ignore
the reply.

Mitch A Williams 7235448c9d i40evf: enable interrupt 0 appropriately
Don't enable vector 0 in the ISR, just schedule the adminq task and let
it enable the vector. This prevents the task from being called
reentrantly. Make sure that the vector is enabled on all exit paths of
the adminq task, including error exits.

Mitch A Williams 4870e176aa i40evf: don't fire traffic IRQs when the interface is down
There is always a possibility that MSI-X interrupts can get lost. To
keep this problem from stalling the driver, we fire all of our MSI-X
vectors during the watchdog routine. However, we should not fire the
traffic vectors when the interface is closed. In this case, just fire
vector 0, which is used for admin queue events.

As a result, we do not enable the interrupt cause for vector 0. This
can cause the admin queue handler to be called reentrantly, which
causes a scary "critical section violation" message to be logged,
even though no real damage is done.

Mitch A Williams 37dfdf373c i40evf: remove leftover VLAN filters
If we're using VLANs and communications with the PF fail during
shutdown, we will leak memory because not all of the VLAN filters will
be removed. To eliminate this possibility, go through the list again

Mitch A Williams 53d0b3ae25 i40evf: refactor shutdown code
If the VF driver is running in the host, the shutdown code is completely
broken. We cannot wait in our down routine for the PF to respond to our
requests, as its admin queue task will never run while we hold the lock.

Instead, we schedule operations, then let the watchdog take care of
shutting things down. If the driver is being removed, then wait in the
remove routine until the watchdog is done before continuing.

Mitch A Williams d4f82fd368 i40evf: Remove some scary log messages
These messages may be triggered during normal init of the driver if the
PF or FW take a long time to respond. There's nothing really wrong, so
don't freak people out logging messages.

If the communication channel really is dead, then we'll retry a few
times and give up. This will log a different more scary message that
should cause consternation. This allows the user to more easily detect a
genuine failure.

Shannon Nelson bf06f7a9ba i40e: let firmware catch the NVM busy error
The NVM update operations take time finish asynchronously, and follow-on
update requests need to wait for the current one to finish. Early
firmware didn't handle this well, so the code had to track the busy state.
The released firmware handles the busy state correctly, returning
I40E_AQ_RC_EBUSY if an update is still in progress, so the code no longer
needs to track this.

Eyal Perry 892311f66f ethtool: Support for configurable RSS hash function
This patch extends the set/get_rxfh ethtool-options for getting or
setting the RSS hash function.

It modifies drivers implementation of set/get_rxfh accordingly.

This change also delegates the responsibility of checking whether a
modification to a certain RX flow hash parameter is supported to the
driver implementation of set_rxfh.

User-kernel API is done through the new hfunc bitmask field in the
ethtool_rxfh struct. A bit set in the hfunc field is corresponding to an
index in the new string-set ETH_SS_RSS_HASH_FUNCS.

Got approval from most of the relevant driver maintainers that their
driver is using Toeplitz, and for the few that didn't answered, also
assumed it is Toeplitz.

Mitch Williams 906a6937d8 i40evf: make early init sequence even more robust
When multiple VFs attempt to initialize simultaneously, the firmware may
delay or drop messages. Make the init code more adept at handling these
situations by a) reinitializing the admin queue if the firmware fails to
process a request, and b) resending a request if the PF doesn't answer.

Once the request has been sent again, the PF might end up getting both
requests and send the configuration information to the driver twice.
This will cause the VF to complain about receiving an unexpected message
from the PF. Since this is not fatal, reduce the warning level of the
log messages that are generated in response to this event.

This patch is the result of running checkpatch on the i40evf driver with
the --strict option. The vast majority of changes are adding/removing

The only possible functional change is changing the flags member of the
adapter structure to be non-volatile. However, according to the kernel
documentation, this is not necessary and the volatile should be removed.

Mitch Williams 1001dc3739 i40e: don't overload fields
Overloading the msg_size field in the arq_event_info struct is just a
bad idea. It leads to repeated bugs when the structure is used in a
loop, since the input value (buffer size) is overwritten by the output
value (actual message length).

Fix this by splitting the field into two and renaming to indicate the
actual function of each field.

Since the arq_event struct has now changed, we need to change the drivers
to support this. Note that we no longer need to initialize the buffer size
each time we go through a loop as this value is no longer destroyed by
arq processing.

In the process, we also fix a bug in i40evf_verify_api_ver where the
buffer size was not correctly reinitialized each time through the loop.

Neerav Parikh f98a20068d i40e/i40evf: Use usleep_range() instead of udelay()
As per the Documentation/timers/timers-howto.txt it is preferred to use
usleep_range() instead of udelay() if the delay value is > 10us in
non-atomic contexts.
So, replacing all the instances of udelay() with 10 or greater than 10
micro seconds delay in the driver and using usleep_range() instead.

Shannon Nelson f905dd62be i40e/i40evf: add max buf len to aq debug print helper
There is at least one case in the Firmware API where the response to a
command changes the buffer size field in the AQ descriptor to a larger
number than what the request's buffer size started as. This is in addition
to setting an error flag and is in order to tell the requester how much
larger a buffer is required for the answer. We need to be sure not to
use that number when dumping the contents of the data buffer because it
can send us into the weeds and generate an invalid pointer exception.

This patch adds a max buffer size parameter to the print helper to be
sure the code knows when to stop.

Vlad Yasevich a12c415834 i40evf: Fix TSO and hw checksums for non-accelerated vlan packets.
This device claims TSO and checksum support for vlans. It also
allows a user to control vlan acceleration offloading. As such,
it is possible to turn off vlan acceleration and configure a vlan
which will continue to support TSO and hw checksums.

In such situation the packet passed down the the device will contain
a vlan header and skb->protocol will be set to ETH_P_8021Q.
The device assumes that skb->protocol contains network protocol
value and uses that value to set up TSO and checksum information.
This results in corrupted frames sent on the wire.

This patch extract the protocol value correctly and corrects TSO
and checksums for non-accelerated traffic.

Fix this by using vlan_get_protocol() helper.

Shannon Nelson cd552cb49e i40e/i40evf: Add nvmupdate support
This implements a state machine intended to support the userland tool for
updating the device eeprom. The state machine implements one-shot reads,
writes, multi-step write sessions, and checksum requests. If we're in the middle
of a multi-step write session, no one should fire off other writes, however, one
shot reads are valid. The userland tool is expected to keep track of its session
status, arrange the placement and ordering of the writes, and deal with the
checksum requirement.

This patch also adds nvmupdate support to ethtool callbacks.
The get_eeprom() and set_eeprom() services in ethtool are used here to
facilitate the userland NVMUpdate tool. The 'magic' value in the get and
set commands is used to pass additional control information for managing
the read and write steps.

The read operation works both as normally expected in the standard ethtool
method, as well as with the extra NVM controls. The write operation
works only for the expanded NVM functions - the normal ethtool method is
not allowed because of the NVM semaphore management needed for multipart
writes, as well as the checksum requirement.

Cases where we program more than one filter per flow (Ipv4), the

since it will be freed by the clean routine. This also fixes an issue
where the filter program routine was not checking if there were
descriptors available for programming a filter.

Mitch Williams fc86a970a4 i40evf: set flags before sending message
In some circumstances, the firmware could beat us to the punch, and the
reply from the PF would come back before we were able to properly modify
the aq_pending and aq_required flags. This would mess up the flags and
put the driver in an indeterminate state, much like Schrödinger's cat.
However, unlike the cat, the driver is definitely dead.

To fix this, simply set the flags before sending the request to the AQ.

Mitch Williams 6a8e93db98 i40evf: return more useful error information
When verifying the API version (which is the first time the driver
communicates with the firmware and thus the PF driver), there are many
ways in which a failure can occur. There may be an error from the
firmware, there may be unresponsive firmware, there may be an error from
the PF driver, etc, etc.

Make this function return more useful information, instead of just -EIO.
Propagate FW errors back to the caller, and log a message if the PF
sends an invalid reply.

of data in a descriptor.

Mitch Williams d732a18445 i40evf: fix crash when changing ring sizes
i40evf_set_ringparam was broken in several ways. First, it only changed
the size of the first ring, and second, changing the ring size would
often result in a panic because it would change the count before
deallocating resources, causing the driver to either free nonexistent
buffers, or leak leftover buffers.

Fix this by storing the descriptor count in the adapter structure, and
updating the count for each ring each time we allocate them. This
ensures that we always free the right size ring, and always end up with
the requested count when the device is (re)opened.

David S. Miller 014b20133b Merge branch 'ethtool-rssh-fixes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/bwh/net-next
Ben Hutchings says:

====================
Pull request: Fixes for new ethtool RSS commands

This addresses several problems I previously identified with the new
ETHTOOL_{G,S}RSSH commands:

1. Missing validation of reserved parameters
2. Vague documentation
3. Use of unnamed magic number
4. No consolidation with existing driver operations

I don't currently have access to suitable network hardware, but have
tested these changes with a dummy driver that can support various
combinations of operations and sizes, together with (a) Debian's ethtool
3.13 (b) ethtool 3.14 with the submitted patch to use ETHTOOL_{G,S}RSSH
and minor adjustment for fixes 1 and 3.

v2: Update RSS operations in vmxnet3 too

The RESETTING state means that a Catastrophic Hardware Bad Thing is
happening and the driver need to tiptoe around and not use the admin

On the other hand, a reinit is no big deal and we can use the admin

This fixes a Tx hang and FW crash that happens after setting the MTU on

Jean Sacren e3e3bfdd1d i40e/i40evf: fix error checking path
The commit 6494294f27 ("i40e/i40evf: Use
dma_set_mask_and_coherent") uses dma_set_mask_and_coherent() to
replace dma_set_coherent_mask() for the benefit of return error.
The conversion brings some confusion in error checking as whether
against DMA_BIT_MASK(64) or DMA_BIT_MASK(32). For one, if error is
zero, the check will be against DMA_BIT_MASK(64) twice. Fix this
error checking by binding the check to the pertinent one.

the L4 type return when we know it is an L4 hash.
This requires use of the ptype decoder ring, so enable it.

PF, or detected by the watchdog task, prevent the watchdog from
processing admin queue requests, and schedule the reset task.

In the reset task, wait first for the reset to start, then for it to
complete, then reinit the driver.

If the reset never appears to complete after a long, long time (>10
seconds is possible depending on what's going on with the PF driver),
then set a flag to indicate that PF communications have failed.

If this flag is set, check for the reset to complete in the watchdog,
and attempt to do a full reinitialization of the driver from scratch.

With these changes the VF driver correctly handles a PF reset event
while running on bare metal, or in a VM.

Mitch Williams e8106ebe2f i40evf: change type of flags variable
As pointed out by Dan Carpenter (from Oracle), the flags variable is
declared as a 64-bit long but all of the flags are defined as u32,
which may lead to unintended consequences. Fix this by declaring flags
as u32 (since we don't need any more than about a dozen flags right
now), and remove the volatile qualifier, since it's unnecessary and
just makes checkpatch cry.

Since we store the traffic vector names in the queue vector struct, we
don't need to maintain an array of strings for these names in the

when allocating the misc irq vector.

Greg Rose 62683ab51e i40evf: virtual channel interface
This PCI-E SR-IOV virtual function (VF) driver is dependant upon the
physical function (PF) driver (i40e) for nearly all of its hardware
configuration. Requests from the VF driver are passed to the PF using
the hardware's Admin Queue.

This patch contains the functionality for communicating with the PF
driver. Because of the delay inherent in this communications channel,
most of the replies from the PF driver are handled asynchronously. The
exceptions are the "send API version" and "get VF config" messages,
which busy-wait because they are done so early during init that
interrupts are not yet configured.
