Rafael Aquini 198d1597cc fs: proc: task_mmu: show page size in /proc/<pid>/numa_maps
The output of /proc/$pid/numa_maps is in terms of number of pages like
anon=22 or dirty=54.  Here's some output:

  7f4680000000 default file=/hugetlb/bigfile anon=50 dirty=50 N0=50
  7f7659600000 default file=/anon_hugepage\040(deleted) anon=50 dirty=50 N0=50
  7fff8d425000 default stack anon=50 dirty=50 N0=50

Looks like we have a stack and a couple of anonymous hugetlbfs
areas page which both use the same amount of memory.  They don't.

The 'bigfile' uses 1GB pages and takes up ~50GB of space.  The
anon_hugepage uses 2MB pages and takes up ~100MB of space while the stack
uses normal 4k pages.  You can go over to smaps to figure out what the
page size _really_ is with KernelPageSize or MMUPageSize.  But, I think
this is a pretty nasty and counterintuitive interface as it stands.

This patch introduces 'kernelpagesize_kB' line element to
/proc/<pid>/numa_maps report file in order to help identifying the size of
pages that are backing memory areas mapped by a given task.  This is
specially useful to help differentiating between HUGE and GIGANTIC page
backed VMAs.

This patch is based on Dave Hansen's proposal and reviewer's follow-ups

Petr Cermak 695f055936 fs/proc/task_mmu.c: add user-space support for resetting mm->hiwater_rss (peak RSS)
Peak resident size of a process can be reset back to the process's
current rss value by writing "5" to /proc/pid/clear_refs.  The driving
use-case for this would be getting the peak RSS value, which can be
retrieved from the VmHWM field in /proc/pid/status, per benchmark
iteration or test scenario.

Jaegeuk Kim bba681cbb2 f2fs: introduce a batched trim
This patch introduces a batched trimming feature, which submits split discard
commands.

This is to avoid long latency due to huge trim commands.
If fstrim was triggered ranging from 0 to the end of device, we should lock
all the checkpoint-related mutexes, resulting in very long latency.

Jaegeuk Kim 2d834bf9ac f2fs: support norecovery mount option
This patch adds a mount option, norecovery, which is mostly same as
disable_roll_forward. The only difference is that norecovery should be activated
with read-only mount option.

This can be used when user wants to check whether f2fs is mountable or not
without any recovery process. (e.g., xfstests/200)

That laconic "some MM" is mainly the removal of remap_file_pages(),
which is a big simplification of the VM, and which gets rid of a *lot*
of random cruft and special cases because we no longer support the
non-linear mappings that it used.

From a user interface perspective, nothing has changed, because the
remap_file_pages() syscall still exists, it's just done by emulating the
old behavior by creating a lot of individual small mappings instead of
one non-linear one.

The emulation is slower than the old "native" non-linear mappings, but
nobody really uses or cares about remap_file_pages(), and simplifying
the VM is a big advantage.

Dmitry Monakhov 913e027ca1 fsioctl.c: make generic_block_fiemap() signal-tolerant
__generic_block_fiemap may spin very long time for large sparse files.

Without this patch an unprivileged user may abuse system resources simply
by spawning a vast number of unkilable busyloops (works on ext2/ext3):

Add a mount option to support JBD2 feature:

JBD2_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_ASYNC_COMMIT.  When this feature is opened, journal
commit block can be written to disk without waiting for descriptor blocks,
which can improve journal commit performance.  This option will enable
'journal_checksum' internally.

Using the fs_mark benchmark, using journal_async_commit shows a 50%
improvement, the files per second go up from 215.2 to 317.5.

fs_mark  -d  /mnt/ocfs2/  -s  10240  -n  1000

default:
FSUse%        Count         Size    Files/sec     App Overhead

with journal_async_commit option:

Christoph Hellwig 8650b8a058 nfsd: pNFS block layout driver
Add a small shim between core nfsd and filesystems to translate the
somewhat cumbersome pNFS data structures and semantics to something
more palatable for Linux filesystems.

Thanks to Rick McNeal for the old prototype pNFS blocklayout server
code, which gave a lot of inspiration to this version even if no
code is left from it.

Matthew Wilcox dd22f551ac block: Change direct_access calling convention
In order to support accesses to larger chunks of memory, pass in a
'size' parameter (counted in bytes), and return the amount available at
that address.

Add a new helper function, bdev_direct_access(), to handle common
functionality including partition handling, checking the length requested
is positive, checking for the sector being page-aligned, and checking
the length of the request does not pass the end of the partition.

Miklos Szeredi ef94b1864d ovl: rename filesystem type to "overlay"
Some distributions carry an "old" format of overlayfs while mainline has a
"new" format.

The distros will possibly want to keep the old overlayfs alongside the new
for compatibility reasons.

To make it possible to differentiate the two versions change the name of
the new one from "overlayfs" to "overlay".

  Part of this process is to remove the return code of seq_printf() and friends
  as they are rather inconsistent. It is better to use the new function
  seq_has_overflowed() if you want to stop processing when the buffer
  is full. Note, if the buffer is full, the seq_file code will throw away
  the contents, allocate a bigger buffer, and then call your code again
  to fill in the data. The only thing that breaking out of the function
  early does is to save a little time which is probably never noticed.

  I started with patches from Joe Perches and modified them as well.
  There's many more places that need to be updated before we can convert
  seq_printf() and friends to return void. But this patch set introduces
  the seq_has_overflowed() and does some initial updates."

Joe Perches 9761536e1d debugfs: Have debugfs_print_regs32() return void
The seq_printf() will soon just return void, and seq_has_overflowed()
should be used instead to see if the seq can no longer accept input.

As the return value of debugfs_print_regs32() has no users and
the seq_file descriptor should be checked with seq_has_overflowed()
instead of return values of functions, it is better to just have
debugfs_print_regs32() also return void.

Jaegeuk Kim d5053a34a9 f2fs: introduce -o fastboot for reducing booting time only
If a system wants to reduce the booting time as a top priority, now we can
use a mount option, -o fastboot.
With this option, f2fs conducts a little bit slow write_checkpoint, but
it can avoid the node page reads during the next mount time.

The return values of seq_printf/puts/putc are frequently misused.

Start down a path to remove all the return value uses of these
functions.

Move the seq_overflow() to a global inlined function called
seq_has_overflowed() that can be used by the users of seq_file() calls.

Update the documentation to not show return types for seq_printf
et al.  Add a description of seq_has_overflowed().

Kirill Smelkov 4e07ad6406 vfs: fix typo in s_op->alloc_inode() documentation
The function which calls s_op->alloc_inode() is not inode_alloc(), but
instead alloc_inode() which lives in fs/inode.c .

The typo was there from the beginning from 5ea626aa (VFS: update
documentation, 2005) - there was no standalone inode_alloc() for the
whole kernel history.

Jeff Layton c45198eda2 locks: move freeing of leases outside of i_lock
There was only one place where we still could free a file_lock while
holding the i_lock -- lease_modify. Add a new list_head argument to the
lm_change operation, pass in a private list when calling it, and fix
those callers to dispose of the list once the lock has been dropped.

Jeff Layton e6f5c78930 locks: plumb a "priv" pointer into the setlease routines
In later patches, we're going to add a new lock_manager_operation to
finish setting up the lease while still holding the i_lock.  To do
this, we'll need to pass a little bit of info in the fcntl setlease
case (primarily an fasync structure). Plumb the extra pointer into
there in advance of that.

We declare this pointer as a void ** to make it clear that this is
private info, and that the caller isn't required to set this unless
the lm_setup specifically requires it.

If user wrote F2FS_IPU_FSYNC:4 in /sys/fs/f2fs/ipu_policy, f2fs_sync_file
only starts to try in-place-updates.
And, if the number of dirty pages is over /sys/fs/f2fs/min_fsync_blocks, it
keeps out-of-order manner. Otherwise, it triggers in-place-updates.

This may be used by storage showing very high random write performance.

For example, it can be used when,

Seq. writes (Data) + wait + Seq. writes (Node)

is pretty much slower than,

Rand. writes (Data)

NeilBrown b8faf035ea VFS: allow ->d_manage() to declare -EISDIR in rcu_walk mode.
In REF-walk mode, ->d_manage can return -EISDIR to indicate
that the dentry is not really a mount trap (or even a mount point)
and that any mounts or any DCACHE_NEED_AUTOMOUNT flag should be
ignored.

RCU-walk mode doesn't currently support this, so if there is a dentry
with DCACHE_NEED_AUTOMOUNT set but which shouldn't be a mount-trap,
lookup_fast() will always drop in REF-walk mode.

With this patch, an -EISDIR from ->d_manage will always cause mounts
and automounts to be ignored, both in REF-walk and RCU-walk.

NeilBrown 743162013d sched: Remove proliferation of wait_on_bit() action functions
The current "wait_on_bit" interface requires an 'action'
function to be provided which does the actual waiting.
There are over 20 such functions, many of them identical.
Most cases can be satisfied by one of just two functions, one
which uses io_schedule() and one which just uses schedule().

So:
 Rename wait_on_bit and        wait_on_bit_lock to
        wait_on_bit_action and wait_on_bit_lock_action
 to make it explicit that they need an action function.

 Introduce new wait_on_bit{,_lock} and wait_on_bit{,_lock}_io
 which are *not* given an action function but implicitly use
 a standard one.
 The decision to error-out if a signal is pending is now made
 based on the 'mode' argument rather than being encoded in the action
 function.

 All instances of the old wait_on_bit and wait_on_bit_lock which
 can use the new version have been changed accordingly and their
 action functions have been discarded.
 wait_on_bit{_lock} does not return any specific error code in the
 event of a signal so the caller must check for non-zero and
 interpolate their own error code as appropriate.

The wait_on_bit() call in __fscache_wait_on_invalidate() was
ambiguous as it specified TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE but used
fscache_wait_bit_interruptible as an action function.
David Howells confirms this should be uniformly
"uninterruptible"

The main remaining user of wait_on_bit{,_lock}_action is NFS
which needs to use a freezer-aware schedule() call.

A comment in fs/gfs2/glock.c notes that having multiple 'action'
functions is useful as they display differently in the 'wchan'
field of 'ps'. (and /proc/$PID/wchan).
As the new bit_wait{,_io} functions are tagged "__sched", they
will not show up at all, but something higher in the stack.  So
the distinction will still be visible, only with different
function names (gds2_glock_wait versus gfs2_glock_dq_wait in the
gfs2/glock.c case).

Since first version of this patch (against 3.15) two new action
functions appeared, on in NFS and one in CIFS.  CIFS also now
uses an action function that makes the same freezer aware
schedule call as NFS.

Conrad Meyer 190a8843de fs/fat/: add support for DOS 1.x formatted volumes
Add structure for parsed BPB information, struct fat_bios_param_block,
and move all of the deserialization and validation logic from
fat_fill_super() into fat_read_bpb().

Add a 'dos1xfloppy' mount option to infer DOS 2.x BIOS Parameter Block
defaults from block device geometry for ancient floppies and floppy
images, as a fall-back from the default BPB parsing logic.

When fat_read_bpb() finds an invalid FAT filesystem and dos1xfloppy is
set, fall back to fat_read_static_bpb().  fat_read_static_bpb()
validates that the entire BPB is zero, and that the floppy has a
DOS-style 8086 code bootstrapping header.  Then it fills in default BPB
values from media size and a table.[0]

Media size is assumed to be static for archaic FAT volumes.  See also:

When large directory feathure is enable, We have one case which could cause
overflow in dir_buckets() as following:
special case: level + dir_level >= 32 and level < MAX_DIR_HASH_DEPTH / 2.

Here we define MAX_DIR_BUCKETS to limit the return value when the condition
could trigger potential overflow.

Jan Moskyto Matejka 3568a1dbf1 Documentation: update /proc/stat "intr" count summary
The sum at the beginning of line "intr" includes also unnumbered
interrupts.  It implies that the sum at the beginning isn't the sum
of the remainder of the line, not even an estimation.

Fixed the documentation to mention that.

This behaviour was added to /proc/stat in commit a2eddfa959 ("x86:

Al Viro 293bc9822f new methods: ->read_iter() and ->write_iter()
Beginning to introduce those.  Just the callers for now, and it's
clumsier than it'll eventually become; once we finish converting
aio_read and aio_write instances, the things will get nicer.

For now, these guys are in parallel to ->aio_read() and ->aio_write();
they take iocb and iov_iter, with everything in iov_iter already
validated.  File offset is passed in iocb->ki_pos, iov/nr_segs -
in iov_iter.

Main concerns in that series are stack footprint and ability to
split the damn thing cleanly.

Fabian Frederick 8ca577223f affs: add mount option to avoid filename truncates
Normal behavior for filenames exceeding specific filesystem limits is to
refuse operation.

AFFS standard name length being only 30 characters against 255 for usual
Linux filesystems, original implementation does filename truncate by
default with a define value AFFS_NO_TRUNCATE which can be enabled but
needs module compilation.

This patch adds 'nofilenametruncate' mount option so that user can
easily activate that feature and avoid a lot of problems (eg overwrite
files ...)

Andrey Vagin 49d063cb35 proc: show mnt_id in /proc/pid/fdinfo
Currently we don't have a way how to determing from which mount point
file has been opened.  This information is required for proper dumping
and restoring file descriptos due to presence of mount namespaces.  It's
possible, that two file descriptors are opened using the same paths, but
one fd references mount point from one namespace while the other fd --
from other namespace.

Kirill A. Shutemov 8c6e50b029 mm: introduce vm_ops->map_pages()
Here's new version of faultaround patchset.  It took a while to tune it
and collect performance data.

First patch adds new callback ->map_pages to vm_operations_struct.

->map_pages() is called when VM asks to map easy accessible pages.
Filesystem should find and map pages associated with offsets from
"pgoff" till "max_pgoff".  ->map_pages() is called with page table
locked and must not block.  If it's not possible to reach a page without
blocking, filesystem should skip it.  Filesystem should use do_set_pte()
to setup page table entry.  Pointer to entry associated with offset
"pgoff" is passed in "pte" field in vm_fault structure.  Pointers to
entries for other offsets should be calculated relative to "pte".

Currently VM use ->map_pages only on read page fault path.  We try to
map FAULT_AROUND_PAGES a time.  FAULT_AROUND_PAGES is 16 for now.
Performance data for different FAULT_AROUND_ORDER is below.

TODO:
 - implement ->map_pages() for shmem/tmpfs;
 - modify get_user_pages() to be able to use ->map_pages() and implement
   mmap(MAP_POPULATE|MAP_NONBLOCK) on top.

Few real-world workloads. The sweet spot for FAULT_AROUND_ORDER here is
somewhere between 3 and 5. Let's say 4 :)

This patch (of 2):

Introduce new vm_ops callback ->map_pages() and uses it for mapping easy
accessible pages around fault address.

On read page fault, if filesystem provides ->map_pages(), we try to map up
to FAULT_AROUND_PAGES pages around page fault address in hope to reduce
number of minor page faults.

We call ->map_pages first and use ->fault() as fallback if page by the
offset is not ready to be mapped (cold page cache or something).

Jaegeuk Kim 6b4afdd794 f2fs: introduce f2fs_issue_flush to avoid redundant flush issue
Some storage devices show relatively high latencies to complete cache_flush
commands, even though their normal IO speed is prettry much high. In such
the case, it needs to merge cache_flush commands as much as possible to avoid
issuing them redundantly.
So, this patch introduces a mount option, "-o flush_merge", to mitigate such
the overhead.

If this option is enabled by user, F2FS merges the cache_flush commands and then
issues just one cache_flush on behalf of them. Once the single command is
finished, F2FS sends a completion signal to all the pending threads.

Note that, this option can be used under a workload consisting of very intensive
concurrent fsync calls, while the storage handles cache_flush commands slowly.

Andreas Rohner 2cc88f3a5f nilfs2: implementation of NILFS_IOCTL_SET_SUINFO ioctl
With this ioctl the segment usage entries in the SUFILE can be updated
from userspace.

This is useful, because it allows the userspace GC to modify and update
segment usage entries for specific segments, which enables it to avoid
unnecessary write operations.

If a segment needs to be cleaned, but there is no or very little
reclaimable space in it, the cleaning operation basically degrades to a
useless moving operation.  In the end the only thing that changes is the
location of the data and a timestamp in the segment usage information.
With this ioctl the GC can skip the cleaning and update the segment
usage entries directly instead.

This is basically a shortcut to cleaning the segment.  It is still
necessary to read the segment summary information, but the writing of
the live blocks can be skipped if it's not worth it.
