Peter Zijlstra 16b3ae1233 clocksource: Initialize cs->wd_list
commit 5b9e886a4a upstream.

A number of places relies on list_empty(&cs->wd_list), however the
list_head does not get initialized. Do so upon registration, such that
thereafter it is possible to rely on list_empty() correctly reflecting
the list membership status.

Peter Zijlstra b421b22b00 x86/tsc, sched/clock, clocksource: Use clocksource watchdog to provide stable sync points
Currently we keep sched_clock_tick() active for stable TSC in order to
keep the per-CPU state semi up-to-date. The (obvious) problem is that
by the time we detect TSC is borked, our per-CPU state is also borked.

So hook into the clocksource watchdog and call a method after we've
found it to still be stable.

There's the obvious race where the TSC goes wonky between finding it
stable and us running the callback, but closing that is too much work
and not really worth it, since we're already detecting TSC wobbles
after the fact, so we cannot, per definition, fully avoid funny clock
values.

And since the watchdog runs less often than the tick, this is also an
optimization.

Thomas Gleixner 12907fbb1a sched/clock, clocksource: Add optional cs::mark_unstable() method
PeterZ reported that we'd fail to mark the TSC unstable when the
clocksource watchdog finds it unsuitable.

Allow a clocksource to run a custom action when its being marked
unstable and hook up the TSC unstable code.

Murali Karicheri 5304121ada clocksource: export the clocks_calc_mult_shift to use by timestamp code
The CPSW CPTS driver is capable of doing timestamping on tx/rx packets and
requires to know mult and shift factors for timestamp conversion from raw
value to nanoseconds (ptp clock). Now these mult and shift factors are
calculated manually and provided through DT, which makes very hard to
support of a lot number of platforms, especially if CPTS refclk is not the
same for some kind of boards and depends on efuse settings (Keystone 2
platforms). Hence, export clocks_calc_mult_shift() to allow drivers like
CPSW CPTS (and other ptp drivesr) to benefit from automaitc calculation of
mult and shift factors.

Kyle Walker 36374583f9 clocksource: Defer override invalidation unless clock is unstable
Clocksources don't get the VALID_FOR_HRES flag until they have been
checked by a watchdog. However, when using an override, the
clocksource_select logic will clear the override value if the
clocksource is not marked VALID_FOR_HRES during that inititial check.
When using the boot arguments clocksource=<foo>, this selection can
run before the watchdog, and can cause the override to be incorrectly
cleared.

To address this condition, the override_name is only invalidated for
unstable clocksources. Otherwise, the override is left intact until after
the watchdog has validated the clocksource as stable/unstable.

Minfei Huang 0fb71d340d clocksource: Make clocksource insert entry more efficient
In clocksource_enqueue(), it is unnecessary to continue looping
the list, if we find there is an entry that the value of rating
is smaller than the new one. It is safe to be out the loop,
because all of entry are inserted in descending order.

Vitaly Kuznetsov bbf66d897a clocksource: Allow unregistering the watchdog
Hyper-V vmbus module registers TSC page clocksource when loaded. This is
the clocksource with the highest rating and thus it becomes the watchdog
making unloading of the vmbus module impossible.
Separate clocksource_select_watchdog() from clocksource_enqueue_watchdog()
and use it on clocksource register/rating change/unregister.

After all, lobotomized monkeys may need some love too.

John Stultz 67dfae0cd7 clocksource: Fix abs() usage w/ 64bit values
This patch fixes one cases where abs() was being used with 64-bit
nanosecond values, where the result may be capped at 32-bits.

This potentially could cause watchdog false negatives on 32-bit
systems, so this patch addresses the issue by using abs64().

John Stultz fba9e07208 clocksource: Rename __clocksource_updatefreq_*() to __clocksource_update_freq_*()
Ingo requested this function be renamed to improve readability,
so I've renamed __clocksource_updatefreq_scale() as well as the
__clocksource_updatefreq_hz/khz() functions to avoid
squishedtogethernames.

This touches some of the sh clocksources, which I've not tested.

The arch/arm/plat-omap change is just a comment change for
consistency.

John Stultz f8935983f1 clocksource: Mostly kill clocksource_register()
A long running project has been to clean up remaining uses
of clocksource_register(), replacing it with the simpler
clocksource_register_khz/hz() functions.

However, there are a few cases where we need to self-define
our mult/shift values, so switch the function to a more
obviously internal __clocksource_register() name, and
consolidate much of the internal logic so we don't have
duplication.

John Stultz 0b046b217a clocksource: Improve clocksource watchdog reporting
The clocksource watchdog reporting has been less helpful
then desired, as it just printed the delta between
the two clocksources. This prevents any useful analysis
of why the skew occurred.

Thus this patch tries to improve the output when we
mark a clocksource as unstable, printing out the cycle
last and now values for both the current clocksource
and the watchdog clocksource. This will allow us to see
if the result was due to a false positive caused by
a problematic watchdog.

John Stultz 362fde0410 clocksource: Simplify the logic around clocksource wrapping safety margins
The clocksource logic has a number of places where we try to
include a safety margin. Most of these are 12% safety margins,
but they are inconsistently applied and sometimes are applied
on top of each other.

Additionally, in the previous patch, we corrected an issue
where we unintentionally in effect created a 50% safety margin,
which these 12.5% margins where then added to.

So to simplify the logic here, this patch removes the various
12.5% margins, and consolidates adding the margin in one place:
clocks_calc_max_nsecs().

Additionally, Linus prefers a 50% safety margin, as it allows
bad clock values to be more easily caught. This should really
have no net effect, due to the corrected issue earlier which
caused greater then 50% margins to be used w/o issue.

John Stultz 6086e346fd clocksource: Simplify the clocks_calc_max_nsecs() logic
The previous clocks_calc_max_nsecs() code had some unecessarily
complex bit logic to find the max interval that could cause
multiplication overflows. Since this is not in the hot
path, just do the divide to make it easier to read.

The previous implementation also had a subtle issue
that it avoided overflows with signed 64-bit values, where
as the intervals are always unsigned. This resulted in
overly conservative intervals, which other safety margins
were then added to, reducing the intended interval length.

Patrick Palka 891292a767 time: Fix signedness bug in sysfs_get_uname() and its callers
sysfs_get_uname() is erroneously declared as returning size_t even
though it may return a negative value, specifically -EINVAL.  Its
callers then check whether its return value is less than zero and indeed
that is never the case for size_t.

This patch changes sysfs_get_uname() to return ssize_t and makes sure
its callers use ssize_t accordingly.

sysfs_override_clocksource(): The expression 'if (ret >= 0)' is always true.
This will cause clocksource_select() to always run.
Thus modified ret to be of type ssize_t.

sysfs_unbind_clocksource(): The expression 'if (ret < 0)' is always false.
So in case sysfs_get_uname() failed, the expression won't take an effect.
Thus modified ret to be of type ssize_t.

Thomas Gleixner 332962f2c8 clocksource: Reselect clocksource when watchdog validated high-res capability
Up to commit 5d33b883a (clocksource: Always verify highres capability)
we had no sanity check when selecting a clocksource, which prevented
that a non highres capable clocksource is used when the system already
switched to highres/nohz mode.

The new sanity check works as Alex and Tim found out. It prevents the
TSC from being used. This happens because on x86 the boot process
looks like this:

 tsc_start_freqency_validation(TSC);
 clocksource_register(HPET);
 clocksource_done_booting();
	clocksource_select()
		Selects HPET which is valid for high-res

 switch_to_highres();

 clocksource_register(TSC);
 	TSC is not selected, because it is not yet
	flagged as VALID_HIGH_RES

 clocksource_watchdog()
	Validates TSC for highres, but that does not make TSC
	the current clocksource.

Before the sanity check was added, we installed TSC unvalidated which
worked most of the time. If the TSC was really detected as unstable,
then the unstable logic removed it and installed HPET again.

The sanity check is correct and needed. So the watchdog needs to kick
a reselection of the clocksource, when it qualifies TSC as a valid
high res clocksource.

To solve this, we mark the clocksource which got the flag
CLOCK_SOURCE_VALID_FOR_HRES set by the watchdog with an new flag
CLOCK_SOURCE_RESELECT and trigger the watchdog thread. The watchdog
thread evaluates the flag and invokes clocksource_select() when set.

To avoid that the clocksource_done_booting() code, which is about to
install the first real clocksource anyway, needs to go through
clocksource_select and tick_oneshot_notify() pointlessly, split out
the clocksource_watchdog_kthread() list walk code and invoke the
select/notify only when called from clocksource_watchdog_kthread().

So clocksource_done_booting() can utilize the same splitout code
without the select/notify invocation and the clocksource_mutex
unlock/relock dance.

Thomas Gleixner 03e13cf5ee clockevents: Implement unbind functionality
Provide a sysfs interface to allow unbinding of clockevent
devices. The device is unbound if it is unused or if there is a
replacement device available. Unbinding of broadcast devices is not
supported as we don't want to foster that nonsense. If no replacement
device is available the unbind returns -EBUSY. Unbind is available
from the kernel and through sysfs, which is necessary to drop the
module refcount.

Thomas Gleixner 7eaeb34305 clocksource: Provide unbind interface in sysfs
With the module refcount held for the current clocksource there is no
way to unload the module. 

Provide a sysfs interface which allows to unbind the clocksource. One
could argue that the clocksource override could be (ab)used to do so,
but the clocksource override cannot be used from the kernel itself,
while an unbind function can be used to programmatically check whether
a clocksource can be shutdown or not.

The unbind functionality uses the new skip current feature of
clocksource_select and verifies that a fallback clocksource has been
installed. If the clocksource which should be unbound is the current
clocksource and no fallback can be found, unbind returns -EBUSY.

This does not support the unbinding of a clocksource which is used as
the watchdog clocksource. No point in fostering crappy hardware.

John Stultz d65670a78c clocksource: Avoid selecting mult values that might overflow when adjusted
For some frequencies, the clocks_calc_mult_shift() function will
unfortunately select mult values very close to 0xffffffff.  This
has the potential to overflow when NTP adjusts the clock, adding
to the mult value.

This patch adds a clocksource.maxadj value, which provides
an approximation of an 11% adjustment(NTP limits adjustments to
500ppm and the tick adjustment is limited to 10%), which could
be made to the clocksource.mult value. This is then used to both
check that the current mult value won't overflow/underflow, as
well as warning us if the timekeeping_adjust() code pushes over
that 11% boundary.

Thomas Gleixner 9fb6033625 clocksource: Make watchdog reset lockless
KGDB needs to trylock watchdog_lock when trying to reset the
clocksource watchdog after the system has been stopped to avoid a
potential deadlock. When the trylock fails TSC usually becomes
unstable.

We can be more clever by using an atomic counter and checking it in
the clocksource_watchdog callback. We restart the watchdog whenever
the counter is > 0 and only decrement the counter when we ran through
a full update cycle.

Thomas Gleixner b5199515c2 clocksource: Make watchdog robust vs. interruption
The clocksource watchdog code is interruptible and it has been
observed that this can trigger false positives which disable the TSC.

The reason is that an interrupt storm or a long running interrupt
handler between the read of the watchdog source and the read of the
TSC brings the two far enough apart that the delta is larger than the
unstable treshold. Move both reads into a short interrupt disabled
region to avoid that.
