The problem is that in the original code sound_nblocks could go up to 1024

Clemens Ladisch 5e8e7c3853 sound: fix OSS MIDI output data loss
In the 2.1.6 kernel, the output loop in midi_poll() was changed to
enable interrupts during the outputc() call. Unfortunately, the check
whether the device has accepted the current byte ("ok") was moved behind
the code that removes the byte from the output queue, so one byte would
be lost every time the hardware FIFO is full.

Arnd Bergmann 08604bd993 time: move PIT_TICK_RATE to linux/timex.h
PIT_TICK_RATE is currently defined in four architectures, but in three
different places. While linux/timex.h is not the perfect place for it, it
is still a reasonable replacement for those drivers that traditionally use
asm/timex.h to get CLOCK_TICK_RATE and expect it to be the PIT frequency.

Note that for Alpha, the actual value changed from 1193182UL to 1193180UL.
 This is unlikely to make a difference, and probably can only improve
accuracy. There was a discussion on the correct value of CLOCK_TICK_RATE
a few years ago, after which every existing instance was getting changed
to 1193182. According to the specification, it should be
1193181.818181...

Jonathan Corbet db1dd4d376 Use f_lock to protect f_flags
Traditionally, changes to struct file->f_flags have been done under BKL
protection, or with no protection at all. This patch causes all f_flags
changes after file open/creation time to be done under protection of
f_lock. This allows the removal of some BKL usage and fixes a number of
longstanding (if microscopic) races.

Tejun Heo d886e87cb8 sound: make OSS sound core optional
sound/sound_core.c implements soundcore.ko and contains two parts -
sound_class which is shared by both ALSA and OSS and device
redirection support for OSS. It's always compiled when any sound
support is enabled although it's necessary only when OSS (the actual
one or emulation) is enabled. This is slightly wasteful and as device
redirection always registers character device region for major 14, it
prevents alternative implementation.

This patch introduces a new config SOUND_OSS_CORE which is selected
iff OSS support is actually necessary and build the OSS core part
conditionally.

If OSS is disabled, soundcore merely contains sound_class but leaving
it that way seems to be the simplest approach as otherwise sound_class
should be in ALSA core file if OSS is disabled but should be in
soundcore if OSS is enabled. Also, there's also the user confusion
factor.

trident_write_voice_regs() was getting called with the card spinlock held in

Explanation: we allocate a new virtual channel in open, and then we frob some

registers are shared with other channels, which may be trying to frob the some

Auke Kok 44c10138fd PCI: Change all drivers to use pci_device->revision
Instead of all drivers reading pci config space to get the revision
ID, they can now use the pci_device->revision member.

This exposes some issues where drivers where reading a word or a dword
for the revision number, and adding useless error-handling around the
read. Some drivers even just read it for no purpose of all.

In devices where the revision ID is being copied over and used in what
appears to be the equivalent of hotpath, I have left the copy code
and the cached copy as not to influence the driver's performance.

Jean Delvare 6473d160b4 PCI: Cleanup the includes of <linux/pci.h>
I noticed that many source files include <linux/pci.h> while they do
not appear to need it. Here is an attempt to clean it all up.

In order to find all possibly affected files, I searched for all
files including <linux/pci.h> but without any other occurence of "pci"
or "PCI". I removed the include statement from all of these, then I
compiled an allmodconfig kernel on both i386 and x86_64 and fixed the
false positives manually.

My tests covered 66% of the affected files, so there could be false
positives remaining. Untested files are:

Converts from using struct "class_device" to "struct device" making
everything show up properly in /sys/devices/ with symlinks from the

It also makes the struct sound_card to show up as a "real" device
where all the different sound class devices are placed as childs
and different card attribute files can hang off of. /sys/class/sound is
still a flat directory, but the symlink targets of all devices belonging
to the same card, point the the /sys/devices tree below the new card
device object.

- Eliminate casts to/from void*

- Eliminate checks for conditions that never occur. These typically
  fall into two classes:

	1) Checking for 'dev_id == NULL', then it is never called with

David Howells 7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

 (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

 (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
     something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

 (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

Remove some code which is unneeded if CONFIG_PM=n.

* Make suspend/resume registration look like the rest of drivers:
  #ifdef CONFIG_PM in struct pci_driver, prototypes, actual hooks.
* Drop CS46XX_ACPI_SUPPORT. It logically duplicated CONFIG_PM. It was

* After previous point, sound/oss/cs46xxpm-24.h removed as being useless.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt 0ebfff1491 [POWERPC] Add new interrupt mapping core and change platforms to use it
This adds the new irq remapper core and removes the old one. Because
there are some fundamental conflicts with the old code, like the value
of NO_IRQ which I'm now setting to 0 (as per discussions with Linus),
etc..., this commit also changes the relevant platform and driver code
over to use the new remapper (so as not to cause difficulties later
in bisecting).

This patch removes the old pre-parsing of the open firmware interrupt
tree along with all the bogus assumptions it made to try to renumber
interrupts according to the platform. This is all to be handled by the
new code now.

For the pSeries XICS interrupt controller, a single remapper host is
created for the whole machine regardless of how many interrupt
presentation and source controllers are found, and it's set to match
any device node that isn't a 8259. That works fine on pSeries and
avoids having to deal with some of the complexities of split source
controllers vs. presentation controllers in the pSeries device trees.

The powerpc i8259 PIC driver now always requests the legacy interrupt
range. It also has the feature of being able to match any device node
(including NULL) if passed no device node as an input. That will help
porting over platforms with broken device-trees like Pegasos who don't
have a proper interrupt tree.

Jesper Juhl 2eebb1925d [PATCH] OSS: cs46xx cleanup and tiny bugfix
Here's a patch for cs46xx that
 - (mostly) cleans up the cs46xx driver according to CodingStyle
 - removes a bunch of pointless casts
 - fixes a small, potential use of uninitialized variable, bug
 - reduces the size of the compiled code by 36 bytes
 - reduces the size of the source file by 1831 bytes

I know I should probably have split this into bits, but since I only
thought of that *after* doing all the edits, splitting it up would have
been a royal pain. And since these are all pretty trivial changes I thought
I'd just submit the one huge patch and hope people could live with it (if
not, then just tell me and I'll split it).

The bug fix that's in there may be hard to spot, so I'll point it out. It's
the
   -       int val, valsave, mapped, ret;
   +       int val, valsave, ret;
   +       int mapped = 0;
bit.
Without that change we may use `mapped' uninitialized if, in cs_ioctl, the
first test of "if(state)" is false and the second "if(state)" test is true.

Adrian Bunk aafda4e0d0 [PATCH] update OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER schedule and dependencies
Update the schedule for the removal of drivers depending on
OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER as follows:

- adjust OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER dependencie
- from the release of 2.6.16 till the release of 2.6.17:
  approx. two months for users to report problems with the ALSA
  drivers for the same hardware
- after the release of 2.6.17 (and before 2.6.18):
  remove the subset of drivers marked at OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER without
  known regressions in the ALSA drivers for the same hardware

Additionally, correct some OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER dependencies.
A rationale of the changes is in
