Per commit 1b6269db3f ("KVM: VMX: Handle NMIs before enabling
interrupts and preemption"), NMIs are handled directly in vmx_vcpu_run()
to "make sure we handle NMI on the current cpu, and that we don't
service maskable interrupts before non-maskable ones". The other
exceptions handled by complete_atomic_exit(), e.g. async #PF and #MC,
have similar requirements, and are located there to avoid extra VMREADs
since VMX bins hardware exceptions and NMIs into a single exit reason.
Clean up the code and eliminate the vaguely named complete_atomic_exit()
by moving the interrupts-disabled exception and NMI handling into the
existing handle_external_intrs() callback, and rename the callback to
a more appropriate name. Rename VMexit handlers throughout so that the
atomic and non-atomic counterparts have similar names.
In addition to improving code readability, this also ensures the NMI
handler is run with the host's debug registers loaded in the unlikely
event that the user is debugging NMIs. Accuracy of the last_guest_tsc
field is also improved when handling NMIs (and #MCs) as the handler
will run after updating said field.

Add a wrapper to invoke kvm_arch_check_processor_compat() so that the
boilerplate ugliness of checking virtualization support on all CPUs is
hidden from the arch specific code. x86's implementation in particular
is quite heinous, as it unnecessarily propagates the out-param pattern
into kvm_x86_ops.
While the x86 specific issue could be resolved solely by changing
kvm_x86_ops, make the change for all architectures as returning a value
directly is prettier and technically more robust, e.g. s390 doesn't set
the out param, which could lead to subtle breakage in the (highly
unlikely) scenario where the out-param was not pre-initialized by the
caller.
Opportunistically annotate svm_check_processor_compat() with __init.

Advance lapic timer tries to hidden the hypervisor overhead between the
host emulated timer fires and the guest awares the timer is fired. However,
it just hidden the time between apic_timer_fn/handle_preemption_timer ->
wait_lapic_expire, instead of the real position of vmentry which is
mentioned in the orignial commit d0659d946b ("KVM: x86: add option to
advance tscdeadline hrtimer expiration"). There is 700+ cpu cycles between
the end of wait_lapic_expire and before world switch on my haswell desktop.
This patch tries to narrow the last gap(wait_lapic_expire -> world switch),
it takes the real overhead time between apic_timer_fn/handle_preemption_timer
and before world switch into consideration when adaptively tuning timer
advancement. The patch can reduce 40% latency (~1600+ cycles to ~1000+ cycles
on a haswell desktop) for kvm-unit-tests/tscdeadline_latency when testing
busy waits.

singular write parameter to be gup_flags.
This patch does not change any functionality. New functionality will
follow in subsequent patches.
Some of the get_user_pages_fast() call sites were unchanged because they
already passed FOLL_WRITE or 0 for the write parameter.
NOTE: It was suggested to change the ordering of the get_user_pages_fast()
arguments to ensure that callers were converted. This breaks the current
GUP call site convention of having the returned pages be the final
parameter. So the suggestion was rejected.

Except for RSP and RIP, which are held in VMX's VMCS, GPRs are always
treated "available and dirtly" on both VMX and SVM, i.e. are
unconditionally loaded/saved immediately before/after VM-Enter/VM-Exit.
Eliminating the unnecessary caching code reduces the size of KVM by a
non-trivial amount, much of which comes from the most common code paths.
E.g. on x86_64, kvm_emulate_cpuid() is reduced from 342 to 182 bytes and
kvm_emulate_hypercall() from 1362 to 1143, with the total size of KVM
dropping by ~1000 bytes. With CONFIG_RETPOLINE=y, the numbers are even
more pronounced, e.g.: 353->182, 1418->1172 and well over 2000 bytes.

RSM emulation is currently broken on VMX when the interrupted guest has
CR4.VMXE=1. Rather than dance around the issue of HF_SMM_MASK being set
when loading SMSTATE into architectural state, ideally RSM emulation
itself would be reworked to clear HF_SMM_MASK prior to loading non-SMM
architectural state.
Ostensibly, the only motivation for having HF_SMM_MASK set throughout
the loading of state from the SMRAM save state area is so that the
memory accesses from GET_SMSTATE() are tagged with role.smm. Load
all of the SMRAM save state area from guest memory at the beginning of
RSM emulation, and load state from the buffer instead of reading guest
memory one-by-one.
This paves the way for clearing HF_SMM_MASK prior to loading state,
and also aligns RSM with the enter_smm() behavior, which fills a
buffer and writes SMRAM save state in a single go.

the hanging test nmi-after-sti is trying to deliver 30000 NMIs and tracing

When we're trying to inject an NMI we may fail to do so immediately for
various reasons, however, we still need to inject it so enable_nmi_window()
arms nmi_singlestep mode. #DB occurs as expected, but we're not checking
for pending NMIs before entering the guest and unless there's a different

This reverts commit bb218fbcfa.
As Oren Twaig pointed out the old discussion:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/8292231/
that the change coud potentially cause an extra IPI to be sent to
the destination vcpu because the AVIC hardware already set the IRR bit
before the incomplete IPI #VMEXIT with id=1 (target vcpu is not running).
Since writting to ICR and ICR2 will also set the IRR. If something triggers
the destination vcpu to get scheduled before the emulation finishes, then
this could result in an additional IPI.
Also, the issue mentioned in the commit bb218fbcfa was misdiagnosed.

Current SVM AVIC driver makes two incorrect assumptions:
1. APIC LDR register cannot be zero
2. APIC DFR for all vCPUs must be the same
LDR=0 means the local APIC does not support logical destination mode.
Therefore, the driver should mark any previously assigned logical APIC ID
table entry as invalid, and return success. Also, DFR is specific to
a particular local APIC, and can be different among all vCPUs
(as observed on Windows 10).
These incorrect assumptions cause Windows 10 and FreeBSD VMs to fail
to boot with AVIC enabled. So, instead of flush the whole logical APIC ID
table, handle DFR and LDR for each vCPU independently.

Currently, the nested guest's PAUSE intercept intentions are not being
honored. Instead, since the L0 hypervisor's pause_filter_count and
pause_filter_thresh values are still in place, these values are used
instead of those programmed in the VMCB by the L1 hypervisor.
To honor the desired PAUSE intercept support of the L1 hypervisor, the L0
hypervisor must use the PAUSE filtering fields of the L1 hypervisor. This
requires saving and restoring of both the L0 and L1 hypervisor's PAUSE
filtering fields.

AMD doesn't seem to implement MSR_IA32_MCG_EXT_CTL and svm code in kvm
knows nothing about it, however, this MSR is among emulated_msrs and
thus returned with KVM_GET_MSR_INDEX_LIST. The consequent KVM_GET_MSRS,

Recent optimizations in MMU code broke nested SVM with NPT in L1
completely: when we do nested_svm_{,un}init_mmu_context() we want
to switch from TDP MMU to shadow MMU, both init_kvm_tdp_mmu() and
kvm_init_shadow_mmu() check if re-configuration is needed by looking
at cache source data. The data, however, doesn't change - it's only
the type of the MMU which changes. We end up not re-initializing
guest MMU as shadow and everything goes off the rails.
The issue could have been fixed by putting MMU type into extended MMU
role but this is not really needed. We can just split root and guest MMUs
the exact same way we did for nVMX, their types never change in the
lifetime of a vCPU.
There is still room for improvement: currently, we reset all MMU roots
when switching from L1 to L2 and back and this is not needed.

Previously, the guest_fpu field was embedded in the kvm_vcpu_arch
struct. Unfortunately, the field is quite large, (e.g., 4352 bytes on my
current setup). This bloats the kvm_vcpu_arch struct for x86 into an
order 3 memory allocation, which can become a problem on overcommitted
machines. Thus, this patch moves the fpu state outside of the
kvm_vcpu_arch struct.
With this patch applied, the kvm_vcpu_arch struct is reduced to 15168
bytes for vmx on my setup when building the kernel with kvmconfig.

For some reason, kvm_x86_ops->write_l1_tsc_offset() skipped trace
of change to active TSC offset in case vCPU is in guest-mode.
This patch changes write_l1_tsc_offset() behavior to trace any change
to active TSC offset to aid debugging. The VMX code is changed to
look more similar to SVM, which is in my opinion nicer.

Since commit e79f245dde ("X86/KVM: Properly update 'tsc_offset' to
represent the running guest"), vcpu->arch.tsc_offset meaning was
changed to always reflect the tsc_offset value set on active VMCS.
Regardless if vCPU is currently running L1 or L2.
However, above mentioned commit failed to also change
kvm_vcpu_write_tsc_offset() to set vcpu->arch.tsc_offset correctly.
This is because vmx_write_tsc_offset() could set the tsc_offset value
in active VMCS to given offset parameter *plus vmcs12->tsc_offset*.
However, kvm_vcpu_write_tsc_offset() just sets vcpu->arch.tsc_offset
to given offset parameter. Without taking into account the possible
addition of vmcs12->tsc_offset. (Same is true for SVM case).
Fix this issue by changing kvm_x86_ops->write_tsc_offset() to return
actually set tsc_offset in active VMCS and modify
kvm_vcpu_write_tsc_offset() to set returned value in
vcpu->arch.tsc_offset.
In addition, rename write_tsc_offset() callback to write_l1_tsc_offset()
to make it clear that it is meant to set L1 TSC offset.

When exception payloads are enabled by userspace (which is not yet
possible) and a #PF is raised in L2, defer the setting of CR2 until
the #PF is delivered. This allows the L1 hypervisor to intercept the

For backwards compatibility, when exception payloads are not enabled
by userspace, kvm_multiple_exception modifies CR2 when the #PF

does not work when KVM is builtin and the crypto driver is a module.
Actually the Kconfig conditions for CONFIG_KVM_AMD_SEV try to disable
SEV in that case, but it does not work because the actual crypto
calls are not culled, only sev_hardware_setup() is.
This patch adds two CONFIG_KVM_AMD_SEV checks that gate all the remaining

code when CONFIG_KVM_AMD_SEV=n.

A VMX preemption timer value of '0' is guaranteed to cause a VMExit
prior to the CPU executing any instructions in the guest. Use the
preemption timer (if it's supported) to trigger immediate VMExit
in place of the current method of sending a self-IPI. This ensures
that pending VMExit injection to L1 occurs prior to executing any
instructions in the guest (regardless of nesting level).
When deferring VMExit injection, KVM generates an immediate VMExit
from the (possibly nested) guest by sending itself an IPI. Because
hardware interrupts are blocked prior to VMEnter and are unblocked
(in hardware) after VMEnter, this results in taking a VMExit(INTR)
before any guest instruction is executed. But, as this approach
relies on the IPI being received before VMEnter executes, it only
works as intended when KVM is running as L0. Because there are no
architectural guarantees regarding when IPIs are delivered, when
running nested the INTR may "arrive" long after L2 is running e.g.
L0 KVM doesn't force an immediate switch to L1 to deliver an INTR.
For the most part, this unintended delay is not an issue since the
events being injected to L1 also do not have architectural guarantees
regarding their timing. The notable exception is the VMX preemption
timer[1], which is architecturally guaranteed to cause a VMExit prior
to executing any instructions in the guest if the timer value is '0'
at VMEnter. Specifically, the delay in injecting the VMExit causes
the preemption timer KVM unit test to fail when run in a nested guest.
Note: this approach is viable even on CPUs with a broken preemption
timer, as broken in this context only means the timer counts at the
wrong rate. There are no known errata affecting timer value of '0'.
[1] I/O SMIs also have guarantees on when they arrive, but I have
no idea if/how those are emulated in KVM.

Re-execution after an emulation decode failure is only intended to
handle a case where two or vCPUs race to write a shadowed page, i.e.
we should never re-execute an instruction as part of RSM emulation.
Add a new helper, kvm_emulate_instruction_from_buffer(), to support
emulating from a pre-defined buffer. This eliminates the last direct
call to x86_emulate_instruction() outside of kvm_mmu_page_fault(),
which means x86_emulate_instruction() can be unexported in a future
patch.

The AMD document outlining the SSBD handling
124441_AMD64_SpeculativeStoreBypassDisable_Whitepaper_final.pdf
mentions that if CPUID 8000_0008.EBX[24] is set we should be using
the SPEC_CTRL MSR (0x48) over the VIRT SPEC_CTRL MSR (0xC001_011f)
for speculative store bypass disable.
This in effect means we should clear the X86_FEATURE_VIRT_SSBD
flag so that we would prefer the SPEC_CTRL MSR.

The kvm struct has been bloating. For example, it's tens of kilo-bytes
for x86, which turns out to be a large amount of memory to allocate
contiguously via kzalloc. Thus, this patch does the following:
1. Uses architecture-specific routines to allocate the kvm struct via
vzalloc for x86.
2. Switches arm to __KVM_HAVE_ARCH_VM_ALLOC so that it can use vzalloc
when has_vhe() is true.
Other architectures continue to default to kalloc, as they have a
dependency on kalloc or have a small-enough struct kvm.

This is a fix from reviewing the code, but it looks like it might be
able to lead to an Oops. It affects 32bit systems.
The KVM_MEMORY_ENCRYPT_REG_REGION ioctl uses a u64 for range->addr and
range->size but the high 32 bits would be truncated away on a 32 bit
system. This is harmless but it's also harmless to prevent it.
Then in sev_pin_memory() the "uaddr + ulen" calculation can wrap around.
The wrap around can happen on 32 bit or 64 bit systems, but I was only
able to figure out a problem for 32 bit systems. We would pick a number
which results in "npages" being zero. The sev_pin_memory() would then
return ZERO_SIZE_PTR without allocating anything.
I made it illegal to call sev_pin_memory() with "ulen" set to zero.
Hopefully, that doesn't cause any problems. I also changed the type of
"first" and "last" to long, just for cosmetic reasons. Otherwise on a
64 bit system you're saving "uaddr >> 12" in an int and it truncates the
high 20 bits away. The math works in the current code so far as I can
see but it's just weird.

AMD is proposing a VIRT_SPEC_CTRL MSR to handle the Speculative Store
Bypass Disable via MSR_AMD64_LS_CFG so that guests do not have to care
about the bit position of the SSBD bit and thus facilitate migration.
Also, the sibling coordination on Family 17H CPUs can only be done on
the host.
Extend x86_spec_ctrl_set_guest() and x86_spec_ctrl_restore_host() with an
extra argument for the VIRT_SPEC_CTRL MSR.

svm_vcpu_run() invokes x86_spec_ctrl_restore_host() after VMEXIT, but
before the host GS is restored. x86_spec_ctrl_restore_host() uses 'current'
to determine the host SSBD state of the thread. 'current' is GS based, but
host GS is not yet restored and the access causes a triple fault.
Move the call after the host GS restore.

This patch adds the support for pause filtering threshold. This feature
support is indicated by CPUID Fn8000_000A_EDX. See AMD APM Vol 2 Section
15.14.4 Pause Intercept Filtering for more details.
In this mode, a 16-bit pause filter threshold field is added in VMCB.
The threshold value is a cycle count that is used to reset the pause
counter. As with simple pause filtering, VMRUN loads the pause count
value from VMCB into an internal counter. Then, on each pause instruction
the hardware checks the elapsed number of cycles since the most recent
pause instruction against the pause Filter Threshold. If the elapsed cycle
count is greater than the pause filter threshold, then the internal pause
count is reloaded from VMCB and execution continues. If the elapsed cycle
count is less than the pause filter threshold, then the internal pause
count is decremented. If the count value is less than zero and pause
intercept is enabled, a #VMEXIT is triggered. If advanced pause filtering
is supported and pause filter threshold field is set to zero, the filter
will operate in the simpler, count only mode.

KVM and perf have a special backdoor mechanism to report the IP for interrupts
re-executed after vm exit. This works for the NMIs that perf normally uses.
However when perf is in timer mode it doesn't work because the timer interrupt
doesn't get this special treatment. This is common when KVM is running
nested in another hypervisor which may not implement the PMU, so only
timer mode is available.
Call the functions to set up the backdoor IP also for non NMI interrupts.
I renamed the functions to set up the backdoor IP reporting to be more
appropiate for their new use. The SVM change is only compile tested.
v2: Moved the functions inline.
For the normal interrupt case the before/after functions are now
called from x86.c, not arch specific code.
For the NMI case we still need to call it in the architecture
specific code, because it's already needed in the low level *_run
functions.

If KVM enable_vmware_backdoor module parameter is set,
the commit change VMX to now intercept #GP instead of being directly
deliviered from CPU to guest.
It is done to support access to VMware Backdoor I/O ports
even if TSS I/O permission denies it.
In that case:
1. A #GP will be raised and intercepted.
2. #GP intercept handler will simulate I/O port access instruction.
3. I/O port access instruction simulation will allow access to VMware
backdoor ports specifically even if TSS I/O permission bitmap denies it.
Note that the above change introduce slight performance hit as now #GPs
are now not deliviered directly from CPU to guest but instead
cause #VMExit and instruction emulation.
However, this behavior is introduced only when enable_vmware_backdoor

KVM: SVM: Add MSR-based feature support for serializing LFENCE
KVM: x86: Add a framework for supporting MSR-based features
Linux (among the others) has checks to make sure that certain features
aren't enabled on a certain family/model/stepping if the microcode version
isn't greater than or equal to a known good version.
By exposing the real microcode version, we're preventing buggy guests that
don't check that they are running virtualized (i.e., they should trust the
hypervisor) from disabling features that are effectively not buggy.

In order to determine if LFENCE is a serializing instruction on AMD
processors, MSR 0xc0011029 (MSR_F10H_DECFG) must be read and the state
of bit 1 checked. This patch will add support to allow a guest to
properly make this determination.
Add the MSR feature callback operation to svm.c and add MSR 0xc0011029
to the list of MSR-based features. If LFENCE is serializing, then the
feature is supported, allowing the hypervisor to set the value of the
MSR that guest will see. Support is also added to write (hypervisor only)
and read the MSR value for the guest. A write by the guest will result in
a #GP. A read by the guest will return the value as set by the host. In
this way, the support to expose the feature to the guest is controlled by
the hypervisor.

Provide a new KVM capability that allows bits within MSRs to be recognized
as features. Two new ioctls are added to the /dev/kvm ioctl routine to
retrieve the list of these MSRs and then retrieve their values. A kvm_x86_ops
callback is used to determine support for the listed MSR-based features.

- sanitize the array_index_nospec protection mechanism: Remove the

non-const local variable.
- make the microcode loader more robust by properly propagating error
codes. Provide information about new feature bits after micro code
was updated so administrators can act upon.
- optimizations of the entry ASM code which reduce code footprint and
make the code simpler and faster.
- fix the {pmd,pud}_{set,clear}_flags() implementations to work
properly on paravirt kernels by removing the address translation
operations.
- revert the harmful vmexit_fill_RSB() optimization
- use IBRS around firmware calls
- teach objtool about retpolines and add annotations for indirect

- explicitly disable jumplabel patching in __init code and handle
patching failures properly instead of silently ignoring them.
- remove indirect paravirt calls for writing the speculation control

RSM instruction is used by the SMM handler to return from SMM mode.
Currently, rsm causes a #UD - which results in instruction fetch, decode,
and emulate. By installing the RSM intercept we can avoid the instruction
fetch since we know that #VMEXIT was due to rsm.
The patch is required for the SEV guest, because in case of SEV guest
memory is encrypted with guest-specific key and hypervisor will not
able to fetch the instruction bytes from the guest memory.

vmx_vcpu_run() and svm_vcpu_run() are large functions, and giving

With this optimization, the retpoline-guest/retpoline-host case is
